Clay mural made by Catalan sculptor Josep Maria Subirachs in collaboration with ceramic artist Antoni Cumella in 1959. The ten Roman numerals refer to the Ten Commandments received by Moses, a fitting theme for the only ornamental element on the Law School of the University of Barcelona.
The Tables of the Law, 1959 Potter's clay, 300 x 250 cm In 1959, Subirachs carries out, in collaboration with the ceramic artist Antoni Cumella, a clay mural for the foyer of the University of Barcelona's Law School, considered the first modern and civilized public building built in Catalonia after the Civil War and designed by the team of architects formed by Guillermo Giráldez, Pedro López Iñigo and Xavier Subías. This relief, which is the only ornamental element in the building, represents The Tables of the Law, incorporating in roman numerals the numbers stated at the top of the legal text of Moses, an emblematic theme and one which is very suitable for the building it decorates. In addition to the use positive-negative forms, a technique later repeated many times, this is one of the first uses by Subirachs of communication symbols, in this case figures, elements that, together with letters, he has incorporated on many occasions.
